The demand for ever cleaner, more efﬁcient energy generation and accessibility places great demands on the researcher. We have developed a series of turnkey solutions from gas sorption studies (CO₂, H₂, CH₄…), through assessment of battery efﬁciency and safety, gas hydrate formation, and even to non-destructive assessment of nuclear waste.

	Nuclear
	Each stage in the nuclear fuel cycle, from ore extraction to fuel recycling and waste management, requires characterisation of the different materials used and accurate quantifying of radioactive substances. Thermal analysis and calorimetry can provide accurate measurement solutions at each stage.

Fuel Cell & Hydrogen

Hydrogen can be produced as a storable, clean fuel from the world's sustainable nonfossil primary energy sources—solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, biomass, geothermal, nuclear, or tidal. Storage of hydrogen in solid materials has the potential to become a safe and efficient way to store energy, both for stationary and mobile applications with fuel cells. The calorimetric techniques are ideal tools for the investigation of the storage capacities of various materials under normal and high pressures. Thermal techniques are also used for the investigation of ceramics and materials used in the fuel cells.

	CO2 Capture and Sequestration
	Carbon neutral energy generation lies not just with renewable sources of energy, but with technology to make existing, and future energy sources, more environmentally responsible. One of the key areas of research is into the capture and sequestration of CO2 and Setaram offers a broad range of technologies that can be used to assist your research in these important fields.

	Battery Development and Testing
	Batteries are essential power sources for every application from your new MP3 player, to the development of carbon neutral transportation. As demand for new and more powerful battery packs grows so do materials requirements. Setaram offers you a broad range of technologies for your laboratory, including traditional TGA and DSC as well as Gas Sorption techniques.

	Biomass
	Thermogravimetry allows acquiring data on biomass decomposition (combustion, torrefaction or pyrolysis) steps involving mass losses. Simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry detects all the heat effects of the sample, and volatiles can be transferred to gas analyzers for identification.

Fossil energies

Fossil fuels are present in nature in different forms: solid, liquid, gas. Most of them are directly burned as fuel, carbonized or distilled to produce secondary fuels. The thermal treatment is of great importance in fossil fuel uses. Thermal analysis and calorimetry are of prime interest in this field, especially for crude oil, coal, oil shales or heavy oils especially, for their classification and characterization, for their thermal transformation and for the combustion process.

Catalysts & Adsorbents

Catalysts are generally used to lower the energy input necessary for a chemical reaction to occur and to increase the corresponding reaction rate. On the industrial scale, it allows running reactions at temperatures lower than those that are naturally requested. Catalytic reaction schemes often go through a first step of adsorption of at least one of the reactants, and can thus be studied as simple adsorbents. Adsorbents such as zeolites, active carbons, MOF’S are also investigated for their properties of gas storage (hydrogen, CO₂). Thermogravimetry and volumetry are techniques allowing the quantification of the adsorbate, and calorimetry provides key data for the determination of the strength and nature of the interactions.

Gas Hydrates

Although hydrates are known to store immense amounts of methane, with major implications for energy resources and climate, the natural controls on hydrates and their impacts on the environment are very poorly understood. With the adaptation of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) to high pressure investigations, the calorimetric technique is the most suitable method for predicting gas hydrate formation, determining the thermodynamic properties and the kinetics of formation and dissociation with any type of gas and mixture.
