The storage of hydrogen and the development of fuel cells are one of the main issues for the development of renewable energies in the next few years. Different groups of materials have the potentiality to store and release hydrogen:
–    carbon : nanotubes and graphite nanofibers
–    other high surface area materials :
– H2O-reactive chemical hydrides: zeolites, gas hydrates, metal oxide frameworks (MOFs)
– thermal chemical hydrides
– rechargeable hydrides borohydrides, alanates, amides.

The R&D issues that can be followed by the calorimetric techniques are to find lower desorption temperatures, higher desorption kinetics, optimization of the recharge time and pressure, heat management, cyclic life, optimization of the storage capacity.
