Sigmameter は、材料の特殊飽和磁化(σs)を測定するために設計されています。このパラメーターは、強磁性相の特性を表し、原理的には試料の構造や形状には無関係です。強磁性混合体が磁界中に置かれると磁化します。磁化は、磁界強度がその最大に達するまで増加します。
特殊飽和磁化(σs)は、最大磁性モーメントと材料の重量との比です（磁性モーメントは、試料を磁界から引き出し、電磁コイル内で誘導されたe.m.f.を測定することにより決定できます。積分値は、試料の σs 値に比例し、試料が磁界内で飽和したことを示します。読み取り計器のマイクロプロセッサーは、e.m.f.を積分し、σs 値と強磁性相の成分を計算しディジタルディスプレイに値を表示します。
